You and me on the colored ground. Falling trees may have brought us down. You and me caught up in the sounds. We did not see the chaos coming down. Hand in hand, we walked here, our intentions were clear. Step by step, without fear, we heard the danger appear. Little did we know, that we'd end up hurt. Nothing left to show, faces in the dirt. All out on our own, wishin' we could return. All in all, it seems weird after all of these years, That tree by tree, they fell near, and now we're lying here.

I call her black-eyed Susan when she comes around. She reminds me of a true-love that I had in my hometown. A kind of love that never leaves you lonely or down. Is that what I found? She don't care about the weather, or things going on. She's got the deepest set of blue eyes I've ever laid mine upon. But she's not my blue-eyed darling that I've loved all along. She don't belong. 'Cause when you've had the real thing, You wonder what's next. Is there any way you'll find something better, Than the love before black-eyed Susan? She's got a mind just as careful, and a heart just as true. We seem to get along so easy, almost like childhood friends do. I can see her love for me to be strong, through and through. If only she knew.

I Can't Run 04:28
I can't run if you just wanna stay. Ain't no chance I'm gettin' over you that way. You said you'd had enough, you wanna figure it out alone, But you can't hold me close if I'm trying to let you go. I grab my shoes and my guitar, that's all I want. Keep the rest, I'm bettin' on a change of heart. I'm not five steps out the door before you say my name, I said I know it's hard, but this is what you wanted babe. No more late nights to stay up dreamin', Or phone calls just to hear you breathin'. I know you need this and you really don't want this, But if you don't let go, I can't run. You'll hold your own, yeah I know you'll be just fine. A little less me, a little more friends and white wine. Please don't call me babe, if you're a couple of glasses in, I'll only pick up if you really need me back again. Since I've gone, things have been quiet around here, Just me and the birds, until they disappear. I know I did you right by leavin' you at the door, But it wouldn't bother me if you held on for a little more. I miss those late nights to stay up dreamin', And those phone calls just to hear you breathin'. I know you need this and I really don't want this, But if I don't let go, you can't run. And if you don't let go, I can't run.

Without You 03:34
A day that carries on, and leaves me lonesome while you're gone. When traffic drags along, I can't remember where I came from. I'm feelin' down and out, so alone without you. A long shift up ahead, but my mind'll be stuck on you instead. I wish you could stop dead, and head south like we had said. I'm on an unknown route, so alone without you. I'm waiting for a change to take my pain away. I'm wishin' you would change and stop this rain today. 'Cause it ain't even hard to see that I'm not me without you.

Lookin' out as the sun's about to set, wonderin' where you've been. Tryin' to figure out what to believe about it all, and if you'll ever come back again. We used to make our home in any place that we would go. But an empty house, full of doubt, is the place I'm livin' in. You should know that wherever you go, I'll be sittin' here, starin' at the door. Just sittin' here, forever yours. Watchin' all the hair fall in her face, the wind should let her be. With every playful blow, a subtlety, she shows. Please carry her back to me. But my dreams don't work, you see. 'Cause you're still far, far away from me. So an empty house, full of doubt, is the place I'm livin' in.

THE STORY BEHIND "One Letter From You"
My grandma, Barbara Whall (aka Abuela) grew up on the beaches of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she met her husband, Bill (aka Pop). She wrote "One Letter From You," between 1939-1940 while her and Pop were apart from each other at college. Pop's parents had sent him to Texas A&M and Abuela's parents had sent her to Mary Washington College in Virginia (an all-girl school at the time). I guess Pop's poor communication skills caused my Abuela to write the only song she's ever written. I grew up listening to her play dozens of jazz standards on piano, so I thought it would be cool to record her original song, and try to make it sound and feel like it would have felt, back when she wrote it. A big thanks to Gus for his willingness to do this. We couldn't resist that old, dirty vinyl feel.
